An important part of the ITH success is how we work with families, as defined by Federal guidelines, with at least one child age 17 or younger. We believe that to break the cycle of homelessness, the children must be reached as well as the adults. The Learning Express Program focuses on developing age appropriate social and developmental skills as well as school readiness for pre-school aged children. After-school activities and life-skill classes are on the menu for older children. This greatly reduces the risk of truancy, delinquency and other activities which raise immediate safety concerns and put a productive future at-risk. In 2009, ITH served 571 case management cases in the Shelter Program. 444 case management cases were served within the Transitional Housing Program. Last year 5,666 “bed nights” were spent in our safe environs.
